James M. Lutz

Born and raised in Calgary, Mr. James Lutz has spent his entire life in the business of law.

James Lutz is a criminal trial lawyer with over 140 reported decisions handling in excess of 4,000 cases in nearly 30 years of practice. His practice covers serious violent offences to drug cases involving illegal search and seizure of evidence and complex defence cases.

In 1987, Mr. Lutz received his bachelor’s degree from Mount Allison University in English Literature. He graduated from the University of Wales in 1991 with honours in law.

Since 2018, he has served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta which is the elected body of lawyers who govern and supervise Alberta’s 10,000 practicing lawyers.

Mr. Lutz has lectured at Mount Royal University, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, and as well, he has taught the Fire Inspectors Training Course for the City of Calgary Fire Department.

In 2020, Mr. Lutz was appointed Queen’s Counsel for contributions to the legal profession and the community. He has appeared at every level of Court in Alberta as well as trial Courts in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Supreme Court of Canada.

The positive feedback and reviews he continues to receive over the years from both his clients and their friends are a testament to his dedication. The time spent to fully prepare a file, from countless hours of reviewing disclosure to meeting with the client (and in some cases, meeting with concerned family members), to defending the client in trial court are the most rewarding hours Mr. Lutz has in a day.
